How did we get here? In order to understand how the Universe has changed from its initial simple state following the Big Bang (only cooling elementary particles like protons and electrons) into the magnificent Universe we see as we look at the night sky, we must understand how stars, galaxies and planets are formed.

When this happens, the newly-discovered galaxy string will contain many thousands of galaxies (Images 3 and 4). This new structure defies current models of how the Universe evolved, which can't explain how a structure this big could have formed so early. Credit: NASA. Current observations suggest that the Universe is about 13.7 billion years old. We know that light takes time to travel, so that if we observe an object that is 13 billion light years away, then that light has been traveling towards us for 13 billion years. Essentially, we are seeing that object as it appeared 13 billion years ago.
