Despite Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova upstaging the Americans in 1963 by becoming the first woman in space, and despite the number of women employed behind the scenes during the Apollo programme, not one American woman went to the Moon. This was not only a missed opportunity and but also a missed propaganda coup because the US had women ready to become astronauts years earlier.

Sue Finley has such a long history at NASA. She is still working there today. She’s actually NASA’s longest serving female employee. And she worked on the earliest spacecraft to the moon, the Ranger Series and the Surveyor spacecraft, as well as building the Deep Space Network.

Wilson was selected for the astronaut corps in 1996, and has completed more trips to space than any of her female colleagues. She's flown on three space shuttle missions: in 2006, 2007 and 2010.

"NASA hasn't said, 'Our mission is to land a woman on the moon,'" NASA astronaut Nicole "Duke" Mann, a test pilot and member of NASA's Artemis Team, told Space.com in an interview.
